I met with Mark and we rekindled our relationship by sharing stories and updates our people we mutually know. I shared with him my goal and vision of becoming an Athletic Director and the realities of achieving that goal. In the State of Ohio where the teachers' union is strong and powerful, many school districts require from their Athletic Directors to possess an Administrators' License to formally evaluate the coaches. This stipulation of having a school administrator conducting evaluations has created a roadblock for people like myself in securing these positions. However over the last few years, a trend is beginning to appear that has school districts and the related unions in accepting qualified persons as Athletic Directors that hold an Administrator's license or a Masters in Sports Administration. This is a breakthrough for schools by placing the right person in the appropriate position. In the past, the majority of teachers that earned their Masters in Administration used the Athletic Director's position as a stepping stone to becoming an Assistant Principal, a Principal and eventually a Superintendent.
As for the plan for this mentorship, we both agreed that I would observe and help out in event planning/execution, crowd control, attending league meetings and banquets, discussing evaluations and hiring practices, and any other odds and ends that might pop up. As for a project, I offered to revise his Policies and Procedures Handbook that was from 2007. He accepted my offer. We will start immediately.
